Gucci opened Milan Fashion Week today with a dazzling show that paid tribute to its Twenties origins.
Creative director Frida Giannini did the Italian fashion giant proud with a collection that at once referenced its archives and the season to come.
Eveningwear was the highlight with drop-waist, fringed flapper dresses dripping with gold sequins in Art Deco-inspired motifs.

The designer stuck to a restrained palette of black, white, gold, green and orange, which felt like a nod to the Gucci signature of black, red and green stripes.
Even old tassel and horse prints were given a modern makeover, though they adorned handkerchief-hem skirts and silk trousers instead of scarves.
A dark, moody set and low celebrity turnout ensured that all eyes were on the catwalk rather than the front row, though fashion folk would have been impressed by industry heavyweights including Vogue Italia and UN Goodwill Ambassador Franca Sozzani, former French Vogue Editor Carine Roitfeld and PPR boss Francois-Henri Pinault.

Anna Dello Russo was also among the VIPS, as was John Legend with girlfriend Christy Teigen, and Chinese actress Yang Mi.
Gucci's show heralded that start of a six-day run of shows in Milan.
Among the 73 labels due to take part are Giorgio Armani, Missoni and Roberto Cavalli.
Today's shows also counted Alberta Ferretti and John Richmond, with Prada and D&G due to preview their spring/summer 2012 collections tomorrow.
