Hurricane Irene Leads to Theater Closings, Weak Box Office

(DreamWorks)

The threat posed by Hurricane Irene to the Atlantic Seaboard is leading movie theaters to close and could result in the worst weekend box office of 2011.

The Help continues to lead the pack, with an estimated $13.5 million haul over the Friday to Sunday period.

Zoe Saldanas revenge-action flick Colombiana is expected to open to roughly $11 million, ahead of the Katie Holmes horror movie Dont Be Afraid of the Dark.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes continues to do well in its fourth week, rolling up approximately $8.5 million for fourth place. The controversially marketed Our Idiot Brother looks to earn around $6 million for the #5 spot.

Holdovers dominate the rest of the chart, with Spy Kids 4D ($5 million) expected to edge ahead of The Smurfs ($4.2 million).

Conan The Barbarian, Crazy, Stupid, Love and Fright Night are tracking toward $3 million apiece to round out the Top 10.

Gossip Cop will have updates.

We hope everyone in Irenes path is safe and sound.
