Julia Roberts Ad Banned Because of Excessive Airbrushing

(Lancome)

Julia Roberts LOral advertisement for Lancme has been banned in the United Kingdom for excessive airbrushing.

A Maybelline campaign featuring Christy Turlington was also pulled.

The watchdog Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) upheld complaints from politician Jo Swinson, who argues against overly perfected and unrealistic images of women in advertisements.

Roberts ad promotes Teint Miracle foundation, and was shot by famed photographer Mario Testino. Turlingtons is for an anti-ageing line called The Eraser.

Swinson claims the faces in the digitally altered photos were not representative of the results the product could achieve.

Pictures of flawless skin and super-slim bodies are all around, but they dont reflect reality, said Swinson. Excessive airbrushing and digital manipul ation techniques have become the norm, but both Christy Turlington and Julia Roberts are naturally beautiful women who dont need retouching to look great.

The ASA agreed, ruling that the Roberts and Turlington ads breached the standards for exaggeration.

On the basis of the evidence we have received we could not conclude that the ad image accurately illustrated what effect the product could achieve.
