The New Yorkers Steve Jobs Cover: Heavenly Or Disrespectful?

(New Yorker)

The death of Steve Jobs has led to tributes in every format, as the world mourns the loss of the iconic innovator to pancreatic cancer at just 56 years old.

Next week will see a number of magazine covers honoring the Apple co-founder, but one in particular has generated some controversy.

The New Yorker will print a cover depicting Jobs, in his famous black turtleneck, arriving at Heavens pearly gates, where St. Peter is shown checking an iPad.

The problem is that Jobs wasnt Christian he was Buddhist.

Some observers are pointing out that while the illustration is meant to be flattering to Jobs (by suggesting that his life was both good and massively influential), its an insult to his personal spiritual convictions.

In their view, its disrespectful to commemorate Jobs life by portraying him with images antithetical to his beliefs about the afterlife.

The covers defenders argue that its just a humorous illustration intended to honor the tech giant and shouldnt be examined too seriously for meaning.

What do you think?
